After studying at the Seminary, he studied Teology at the Pontyfical Gregorian University in Rome, where he took his degree in 1974, presenting a minor thesis about the papal infability. In 1998, he took his doctor’s degree with the thesis ‘La familia, Iglesia doméstica’. He was ordained as a priest in Palencia on 9th August 1970. He filled the following offices: coadjutor of ‘San Lázaro’ parish church (Palencia, 1970-1971), teacher in the Seminary (Palencia, 1971-1972 and 1975-1977); diocesan delegate responsible for the media (1975-1977); rector in the Seminary, Carrión de los Condes - Palencia (1977-1982); coadjutor of ‘San José’ parish church (Palencia, 1982-1988; teacher of Religion at 'Victoria Macho’ Secondary School) (1988-1992); diocesan delegate responsible for family pastoral (1990-1992); pro-vicar general (1996-1998); rector of the Minor and Major Seminaries, Palencia (1992-1998); Professor of Theology at the Theological Institute of the Seminary, Palencia (1975), vicar general of Palencia (1999) and canon of the cathedral (2003).

He wrote the following books: ‘Antropología y Teología del Matrimonio’ (Madrid, 1987), ‘Parábolas como dardos’ (Madrid, 1992) (several editions; it was also published in Portuguese), ‘Una santidad muy humana. La Iglesia, misterio de comunión y misión’ (Madrid, 1994), ‘El hermano Rafael, mártir de la vocación’ (Ávila, 1995), ‘Serán una sola carne. Estudio interdisciplinar sobre el matrimonio y la familia’ (Madrid, 1996), ‘La iglesia doméstica: sus fundamentos teológicos y su radicación en la Iglesia particular (Excepta ex disertatione ad Doctoratum) (Pontificia Universitas Gregoriana)’ (Rome, 1999), ‘La pasión de solo Dios: espiritualidad del Hno.
